How To Stay Consistent When Life Pulls You Away From Your Routine

One of the biggest challenges for busy adults, especially those who travel for work, is staying consistent when life gets chaotic. This weekend in Nashville, TN reminded me that you don’t need perfection, just intention.

Side note – holy mackerel is Nashville a crazy party city!

I booked an Airbnb one mile from the fitness business conference venue. It was close enough to be convenient, far enough to guarantee movement. I was hoping for good weather and my plan paid off. Even with full days of sitting, learning, and collaborating from 9a-5pm, I hit 12-20,000 steps without trying.

My Friday 6am condo gym training session threw a curveball. The gym was in the underground parking garage and thermostat was broken. It was 52 degrees inside and the kettlebell handles were cold.

The satisfaction of completing the session far outweighed the discomfort.

It made me think of our long-time virtual member Erika O., who’s been training in her garage year-round for six years, whether it’s 10 degrees or 90 degrees outside!

I also grabbed a $30 day pass to a local gym so I could train and network with peers Saturday night. I usually don’t train two days in a row, but with Sunday dedicated to travel, I spaced my sessions out as much as possible and made it work.

And yes, I enjoyed Nashville’s “country Vegas” nightlife and hit two well-known BBQ spots.

In all, the foundation stayed the same: take daily walks, exercise when possible, eat reasonably well, and get enough sleep to be sharp for the investment I made in this trip.

Consistency isn’t rigidity. It’s choosing a few non-negotiables that keep you grounded no matter where life takes you.
